Nvidia has issued a voluntary recall for its range of Shield tablets, after the firm discovered that the batteries used inside are a potential fire hazard.
The eight-inch devices that were sold between July 2014 and July 2015 could be a potential risk to owners.
Nvidia revealed in a statement that devices with a B01 battery will not be affected, however those with a Y01 battery will need to be replaced, as they are at risk of overheating.
The firm said: “Nvidia has determined the battery in these tablets can overheat and pose a fire hazard. As part of this recall, Nvidia will be replacing the tablet.
“Nvidia is asking customers to submit a claim for a replacement device. Nvidia is also asking consumers to stop using the recalled tablet, except as needed to participate in the recall and back up data. Consumers will receive a replacement tablet after registering to participate in the recall.”
In other news, following the announcement that US President Barack Obama has signed an order to develop exaflop supercomputers, Nvidia has announced its new tech to help boost the power of CPUs and GPUs.
An exaflop computer is about 30 times more powerful than today’s fastest computers, and will need to be powered by new technologies.
Nvidia’s new high-speed technology, dubbed NVLink interconnect, will help CPUs and GPUs inside supercomputers exchange data five to 12 times faster.
Nvidia added in a blog post: “NVLink will play a key role in the next-generation Summit system at Oak Ridge and in the Sierra system at Lawrence Livermore National Labs.”
