Having recently brought a lawsuit against a Chicago start-up called TeachBook, Facebook is now pursuing legal proceedings to trademark the word ‘face’.
According to Gizmodo, Facebook has taken over the trademark application for the word, originally brought by a UK website called Faceparty.com.
However, the social networking site has run in to opposition in the form of Aaron Greenspan, who was once a room mate with the founder of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg, and who sued him claiming that the idea for the popular social networking website was originally his. He now runs a company called Think Computer, which owns a mobile payments app called FaceCash.
“The possible registration has implications for my company (not to mention hundreds of others, including Apple), so I’ve decided to ask the USPTO for an extension of time to oppose it,” wrote Greenspan in an email.
This isn’t likely to be the final chapter in this saga either, since TechCrunch reports that Facebook has at least 14 trademark applications in the works for the word ‘like’.
