Notebooks boost UK PC growth

Notebooks boost UK PC growth Sales of laptops have jumped spectacularly in Western Europe, boosted by explosive growth in the netbook market, according to the latest report from IDC.

PC sales jumped from 12 per cent to 23 per cent, thanks to the introduction of netbooks with the portable market seeing growth of 60 per cent compared to the same time last year. The increase in sales came despite concerns over the state of the economy in the UK and other mature countries.

"We continue to see a rapid transition to portable PCs around the world, even as economic pressures rise," said director of IDC's Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker, Loren Loverde. "The trend reflects the increasing importance of computing, not just in the home or office, but as an integrated part of our lives.

"Falling prices, more design choice and competition for PC makers to capture this market continue to drive a rapid transition," he added.
