Non-food retailers continued to struggle in May as sales remained weak.
Overall, retail sales fell by 0.8 per cent, but were up by the same amount for the year to date, according to the BRC. However, sales of non-food were down 2.4 per cent in the three months to May compared to the previous year.
Online retailers saw their sales slow to 7.6 per cent, down from the 12.5 per cent growth they saw in April.
"Negative results show spring has been extremely difficult for most non-food retailers," commented director general of the British Retail Consortium, Stephen Robertson. "The turnaround in sales of big-ticket items such as furniture and large electricals, which would indicate real change in the mood of customers, still eludes us."
"Extremely challenging market conditions – particularly for the non-food sectors – continue," added head of retail at KPMG, Helen Dickinson.
