Nominet raises ?3million in UK domain sell-off

Not-for-profit British domain registrar Nominet raised £3 million for charity by auctioning off nearly 3,000 UK web domains.

The most costly were single letter domains, or at least single letters before the .co.uk, at any rate. Domains such as 0.co.uk are clearly not as attractive as single letter TLDs but each went for nearly £40,000.

While some others such as fb.co.uk were bought by Facebook, many of the domains were snapped up by the usual opportunistic domain merchants that sold the domains on for profit.

While the charity fund raising event was generally welcomed, critics noted that the prices were generally low and domain ‘speculators’ dominated the auction with suggestions that Nominet failed to adequately publicise the sell off.
