Microsoft-owned video and chat service Skype announced Skype for Android 2.0 with the updated application adding video calls to the popular smartphone OS.
The new Skype app will allow users to make and receive free one on one video calls over Skype, or at least free of charges other than the normal data rates charged by mobile operators. Android Skype users can chat with Skype users on iPhone, Mac and PCs.
"We are committed to bring Skype Video Calling to as many platforms as possible and are delighted to deliver on this with our new updated Android video chat app," said Skype boss Neil Stevens.
The first 'phase' of the launch of the application will mean that it becomes available on a specific set of high-end smartphones, just four models initially; the HTC Desire S, Sony Ericsson Xperia neo, Sony Ericsson Xperia pro and the Google Nexus S.
Owners of other handsets can install the application but two way video calling will not be available. Hard luck.
