Images and further details of Microsoft's Courier tablet have been leaked, ahead of Apple’s iPad launch early next month.
According to Engadget, which has the new pictures, the Courier will function as a “digital journal”, is less than 2.5cm wide, weighs less than 0.5kg and is just slightly bigger than a standard size photograph when closed.
The device will reportedly not run on Windows 7, instead using the same operating system as Zune HD, Pink, and Windows Mobile 7 Series – thought to be Windows CE 6.
The pen-based Courier is built on the Tegra 2 chipset and centres around drawing and writing, with handwriting recognition. According to Engadget, the device uploads content to a special blog-style website.
The device is also rumoured to sport a camera and headphone jack, and will act as Microsoft’s entry into the competitive e-reader market. It is expected to launch in the second half of the year, but as yet no pricing information is available.
The new information follows the ‘leak’ of a video to the Gizmodo tech blog in September, which showed images and details of the Courier and bore the name of Pioneer Studios, a division within Microsoft’s entertainment and devices department.
