Netflix to battle with Sky over Hollywood movies rights

Netflix hits 1m UK users in 7 months

Video streaming service Netflix has reached 1m users in the UK and Ireland in just seven months.

European signups were faster there than in any other region worldwide. Netflix puts this down to the fact that most British households have a least one streaming device.

"This membership milestone is evidence that Netflix has rapidly gained popularity in the UK and Ireland," said Netflix CEO Reed Hastings.

"Our British and Irish members clearly enjoy the ability to instantly watch a large variety of TV shows and films streaming from Netflix on their favourite devices whenever they want."

Hastings has announced that the company will be aggressive when bidding for films from Hollywood’s six biggest studios, in an attempt to end Sky’s dominance over premium movie rights.
