The major music labels plan to retire the CD format by the end of next year according to a new report appearing in the Side Line music magazine.
The report claimed that major labels such as EMI, Universal and Sony, all plan to move towards digital services with the physical CD format reserved for limited edition releases sold through major e-tailers such as Amazon.
The move seems less aimed at the aging CD format itself and more an acknowledgement of the reduced demand in owning physical music as digital services such as music stores or or music streaming services, continue to dominate music sales.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Side Line couldn't get any of the labels to go on the record as stating that the venerable 32 year-old music format's days are numbered.
However in an update Side Line said that industry insiders had privately confirmed that plans were afoot to retire the CD format.
