Morrisons has signalled its intentions to enter the non-food space with the UK's fourth largest supermarket chain saying it hopes to exploit its surplus space to build upon the increasing numbers of customers shopping in its stores. However, unlike its rivals Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's, the firm will not be entering into non-food retail itself; rather it is seeking third party retailers who it feels will complement its growing reputation as a food-specialist, reports Retail Week.
No names have been mentioned as to potential partners, but it is likely the pattern of products will follow its rivals meaning consumer electronics and PCs are likely to be among the products sold.
Among the stores shortlisted for extensions for the trial are Camden, Canvey Island, Newquay and an unnamed store in north London. Subject to planning applications, the units are expected to be available to potential partners by summer 2009.
