Mobiles to get universal charger

Mobiles to get universal charger The days of having a dozen useless Nokia chargers when all you need is a Sony Ericsson could be coming to an end, with 17 big industry names coming together to agree a universal micro USB standard.

Orange, Telefonica, Vodafone, 3, AT&T, Mobilkom Austria, T-Mobile, Telenor Telstra, Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, LG and Sony Ericsson are all part of the initiative, which is led by the GSM Association.

The move is being pitched as eco-friendly, with the GSMA estimating that energy-efficient chargers will result in a 50 per cent reduction in standby energy consumption and the potential elimination of up to 51,000 tonnes of duplicate charger waste.
