Internet access through mobile phones has almost doubled over the last year according to new data from web analytics company StatCounter. Nokia also remains the world-wide top source for mobile web traffic.
"While global internet usage through mobiles is still under 10%, the pace of growth is remarkable," reckoned StatCounter boss Aodhan Cullen. The company said that Nokia lead worldwide "most probably driven by its dominance in India."
Apple was the top source of internet traffic on mobile devices in both the US and the UK with RIM in second place in the UK. StatCounter wasn't including tablet traffic in the mix.
The company put mobile internet usage as a share of total internet usage at just 0.7 per cent in January 2009, climbing to 1.6 per cent a year later in 2010. Powering ahead, mobile devices accounted for 4.3 per cent of all traffic at the beginning of last year.
As of January 2012, the figure is 8.5 per cent. Not quite the same stratospheric growth as the 2010/2011 time frame but impressive none the less. Presumably by early next year well over 10 per cent of traffic could be from mobile devices, maybe even as high as 15?
