Microsoft has denied that recent security updates were what has been causing Windows 7 to go into a ‘black screen of death’ during boot-up.
Reports yesterday suggested that the problem was caused by a patch released on November 10th. Users’ PCs would lock up and everything would be removed from the desktop, leaving just a black screen.
"Microsoft has investigated reports that its November security updates made changes to permissions in the registry that are resulting in system issues for some customers," Microsoft spokesman Christopher Budd told Reuters. "The company has found those reports to be inaccurate and our comprehensive investigation has shown that none of the recently released updates are related to the behavior described in the reports."
The problem was identified last week by British security software firm Prevx, which claimed that changes to Microsoft's operating system's registry were probably the cause.
According to Reuters, Budd also added that Microsoft's support teams did not see this as a big problem for users, who should contact customer support for free assistance.
