The Lumia phone range is to be discontinued at the end of this year, perhaps to make way for Microsoft’s new Surface Phone.
The latest Lumia 650 model, which features built-in-security and encryption along with the other Lumia phones (Lumia 550, 950 and 950 XL) are all going to be phased out in December of this year according to a report from WinBeta.
WinBeta received a tip from an anonymous employee at Microsoft claiming that the company is preparing to “end sales” of Lumia phones. This probably means that production of new devices will be stopped.
These unconfirmed reports come at the same time as a survey from AdDuplex that finds 52.4 per cent of Windows 10 mobile handsets are already operating with the Mobile Anniversary update. 41.3 per cent of handsets are using a build from last year while 6.3 per cent are using even older builds of Microsoft’s mobile OS.
The abandonment of the Lumia platform seems to be quite a shock, considering that (according to Gartner in May), 95 per cent of Windows phones sold were Lumia.
PCR reached out to Microsoft for further comment in regards to the developments surrounding this story and was told that further information will be shared at a later point.
