Motor neuron disease-suffering NFL player Steve Gleason narrated advert using eye-tracking text-to-speech programme

Microsoft Super Bowl advert shows technology ’empowering’

Microsoft’s Super Bowl advert showing technology empowering those in need has seen a large amount of praise.

The ‘Empowering’ advert was narrated by Steve Gleason, a former NFL player who suffers from motor neuron disease, using a programme that tracks Gleason’s eye movements on a virtual keyboard and then converts the text into speech.

"What is technology?" the advert asks, before displaying a variety of ways in which technology is used to educate, help those in need and entertain.

Many uses of technology were shown, including surgeons using technology during surgery, a soldier viewing the birth of his child via video chat, children using programmes to learn, the launch of a rocket and satellite into space and children using prosthetic limbs to play sports.
