Microsoft is the latest firm rumoured to have joined a potential bidding war for voice-over-IP provider Skype.
News agency Reuters reported last week that internet giants Facebook and Google were both considering a move to acquire the voice and video chat service Skype with a Gigaom report suggesting that an announcement may be due this week.
Gigaom's Om Malik citing unnamed sources said that Microsoft had "entered the mix" and had expressed interesting in "either partnering with, acquiring or investing" in Skype.
Malik, speculating as to Microsoft's motives, said that a Skype acquisition would provide a "must-have application/service" that could help the adoption of new versions of the Windows Mobile OS.
