In a bid to close the digital divide, Microsoft is offering discounted Windows 8 laptops and tablets to schoolchildren and teachers in the UK.
In partnership with Intel and school IT provider RM Education, Microsoft will offers 30 per cent off on a variety of devices from manufacturers including Asus and Acer.
"Government-funded UK schools will be eligible for the scheme which provides a range of high-quality, affordable, Windows 8 devices with top-flight software pre-installed to students and teachers for their own personal use," said RM Education in a statement.
This offer is part of Microsoft’s ‘Shape the Future’ subsidised PC programme, which intends to make it easier for UK schools to provide individual devices to students to aid their learning. The company aims to “close the opportunity gap between rich and poor by putting technology in the hands of every child.”
Joice Fernandes, worldwide leader of the Shape The Future programme at Microsoft commented: “Shape the Future has the power to put knowledge in the hands of children. That knowledge empowers them to shape their own future."
