Microsoft admits Linux is a competitor

Microsoft has admitted for the first time that Linux is a genuine threat to its core Windows business.

According to Tech Flash, the software vendor named Red Hat and Canonical as competitors to Windows in its annual Security and Exchange Commission filing.

Analysts said that the move may be down to Microsoft's fear that Linux could use netbooks to increase their exposure – something that could lead to the OS appearing on desktops.

The vendor also named Apple's OSX as a potential competitor to its Windows client business.
