Logitech eyes up console gaming market with $85 million acquisition of Astro

Logitech is looking to spread its wings and expand its reach over the gaming market. Traditionally a PC hardware manufacturer of products such as mice and keyboards, Logitech appears to be shifting its focus more heavily on gaming, in particular console gaming.

With just the I’s left to dot on an $85 million deal, Logitech has announced that it is acquiring console gaming headset maker Astro gaming. The deal is expected to go through in August, with Astro joining the Logitech’s PC gaming-focused Logitech G division.

Although Logitech historically caters for PC gamers, with mice, keyboards and headsets, the company said Astro will continue to remain a ‘console-first brand’. Logitech also said that it had ‘no plans’ to shut the Astro brand down and the company believes it will allow them to cover more ground while not impacting on their current product lines.  

“Astro is the leading player for premium console headsets and is the preferred headset for console e-sports athletes," Ujesh Desai, Logitech G’s vice president, said in a statement. "It's a perfect complement to Logitech G's focus on PC gaming and we couldn't be more excited; we love the team, the brand and the products. Together, we want to make game play even more fun for gamers everywhere.”

The pricing of Astro products compared to Logitech’s proves that the two brands’ markets are different. While there will no doubt be some overlap, Astro is  primarily known for professional-grade premium headphones that cost $250 or more designed for eSports players and the most dedicated enthusiasts. While Logitech's products are typically cheaper and for more casual gamers.
