Lenovo overtakes Apple in the PC market

Lenovo has overtaken Apple in the PC stakes during Q2 2015, leading the market with a 15 per cent share, so says analyst Canalys.

Apple has held the lead since Q3 2014, but Lenovo shipped just under 16 million PCs, some 240,000 more than Apple in Q2 2015.

The worldwide PC market dipped by 12 per cent annually to 109.2 million units, with double-digit percentage declines affecting desktop, notebook and tablet shipments.

Computing vendors including HP, Dell and Apple followed Lenovo with small increases in their shares.

Samsung followed the other vendors, but saw a slight decline in shares due to slowing tablet sales and the scaling back of its participation in the notebook market.

Tim Coulling, senior analyst at Canalys, said: “Apple and Lenovo lead the market in their home countries of the US and China respectively. But Apple is heavily reliant on worldwide iPad shipments, which totaled 10.9 million units this quarter.

“iPads represented 70 per cent of Apple’s total PC shipments in Q2, and these shipments have been falling year-on-year since peaking in Q4 2013.

“‘Lenovo controls almost 30 per cent of the Chinese PC market and is steadily building its share in the US.”

In other news, IDC has reported that mobile workstations have continued to show stronger growth in Q2 2015, while the desktop workstation market saw a slight decline.

Total shipments of mobile workstations increased by 5.4 per cent year-on-year to 288,720 units in Q2 2015, while worldwide desktop workstation shipments declined by 3.7 per cent year-on-year, with units reaching 641,580.

Ebenezer Obeng-Nyarkoh, senior research analyst for worldwide trackers group, added: “Despite the disappointing second quarter results, the market is expected to continue growing as high-end PC users and Apple Mac Pro users migrate to workstations."
