"Our structure is too complicated," says chief exec

Layoffs expected at tech magazine publisher Future

The publisher behind tech magazines such as T3 and MacFormat, and websites including Gizmodo and TechRadar, is restructuring.

Chief executive Zillah Byng-Maddick sent an email to all staff (in the UK, US and Australia) about the plans, which are likely to later involve redundancies, reports Media Week. She also visited UK offices this week to explain the situation to staff.

The publisher will apparently have a single content and marketing team going forwards, as opposed to being structured around different content types like technology and gaming. Plus, one commercial director will lead the entire sales team.

Byng-Maddick said: "At its heart, Future is a great business, but its structure is too complicated. Our expert, trusted content enables us to attract large communities of highly engaged customers who want to buy things, and that’s exceptionally appealing to our clients.

"We’re planning to refocus and simplify our business around those two key stakeholders and that opportunity. We have a clear business model and strategic vision. And we’re starting the conversation about how to apply it with our people now. We’ll update our external stakeholders at our Interims at the end of the month."

Future is conducting two consultations – one on strategy and one on the firm’s structure and job roles. The number of redundancies will be decided at the end of the 45-day process.

Previous Future CEO Mark Wood stepped down in March.
