'If you're thinking of buying an iPad, hold off for now'

Kevin Rose says iPad 2 due in 3-4 weeks

Digg founder and technology investor Kevin Rose has posted details on his personal blog about the upcoming Apple iPad 2 including the release time frame.

Saying “I have it on good authority,” Rose initially posted the claim of the iPad 2 appearing in 3-4 weeks on his Foundation Newsletter. Tuesday the 1st of February was called out as a possible release date. Rose has a patchy record of predictions regarding Apple but was correct about the Apple TV release date and price point.

Rose also said that the iPad 2 would have front and rear facing cameras, no surprise given the number of accessories already seen with holes on both sides, but also said that the device would have a ‘higher dpi’ than the previous phone.

The current iPad display is rather chunky compared to the iPhone 4 ‘retina’ display, with 1024 x 768 pixels spread across a 9.7-inch display which is around 130dpi, far short of the ultra-dense 326dpi of the iPhone 4.

Even if Apple crammed a WQXGA screen of resolution 2560 x 1600 into the iPad frame, that would still be lower than the iPhone 4 ‘retina’ screen dpi, at 311dpi.

Lending weight to the rumour, Apple Insider reported that Apple had but cutting back on vacation allowances for retail staff for a three week period beginning later this month. “Prohibiting vacations during such a large span of time is typically indicative of a major product launch,” they said.

"If you’re thinking of buying an iPad, hold off for now," wrote Rose.
