A new update for iTunes effectively blocks users of the Palm Pre from using the music application.
Update 8.2.1, which was released yesterday, ostensibly provides bug fixes and “addresses an issue with verification of Apple devices.” However, the update has been found to prevent the Pre from syncing with iTunes.
According to MacWorld, Pre users have been able to use iTunes in the past, as Apple’s software would identify the device as an iPod. Essentially an exploit, this was sold as a feature for the Palm Pre, however last month Apple warned that it could close the loophole, saying: “because software changes over time, newer versions of Apple’s iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with non-Apple digital media players.”
“Users can always stay with the current version of iTunes and continue to sync their music,” commented a Palm spokesman at the time. “The Pre also ships with a second option for transferring music and other media content to the device and there are third-party applications we could consider too.”
A workaround is available, which involves using older software, but as yet there is no official channel for Pre users to sync with iTunes.
