Gigabyte has given a preview of what it calls its new ‘mobility empowerment’ initiative – essentially a combination netbook and dock, designed to bridge the gap between desktops and laptops.
Gigabyte has implemented the concept in a number of ways, including clamping a 10.5-inch 3G netbook into a docking station which charges it whilst simultaneously making its functions accessible via a connected TV or other hub.
Probably the most interesting implementation was a docking station loaded with a Geforce GT220 graphics card, which significantly boosts the graphics capability of an average laptop while it is connected. The computer can then be connected to up to three LCD monitors at once for use. The firm is currently talking to distributors in the UK, and the product should be available in the next two months.
Meanwhile, Sitecom was showing off its range of networking products, including what it claims is the world’s smallest wireless N router. The firm’s Gaming Router II is expected to launch in April in the UK, supporting the new line of Smart Living products. Sitecom is currently looking to expand further into Eastern Europe, while consolidating its position in the UK.
Eurpean vendor Hedy is currently trying to crack the UK market with its barebones netbook (currently in the prototype stage) and all in one PC ranges. It has quite a broad portfolio including laptop bags and small form factor mobile phones. Currently strong in Balkan countries, Russia, and much of Europe, the firm is hoping to consolidate this presence with a renewed push into the UK this year.
