Intel paves the way for ultra-thin laptops

Intel has unveiled a new series of low voltage CPUs, which it is hoped will open up possibilities for lightweight consumer laptops, less than an inch thick.

The new processors can also offer an extended battery life, due to lower power consumption.

“With an ultra-thin laptop powered by Intel ultra-low voltage processors, consumers experience a unique balance of performance and power consumption that is incomparable in the market today – all in a slim, sleek package," said Intel’s vice president and general manager of the Mobile Platforms Group, Mooly Eden. "At mainstream price points, Intel is proud to deliver ultra thin for all.”

Intel also showcased its upgraded Core 2 Duo processors, offering speeds of up to 3.06 GHz and its new Mobile GS40 Express Chipset for the new ULV-based laptops, which can support features like HD playback and Windows Vista Premium.
