Intel cutting data centres to save $250m

Intel is making further reductions to its network of data centres in a bid to save the company $250 million.

Diane Bryant, Intel's chief information officer, said that the company is hoping to reduce the number of data centres to 70 by the end of 2015. At its peak, the company had 147 data centres.

The savings will be made through cuts in cooling tech, system maintenance and support, though it is unknown if staff cuts will follow.

Intel saved as much as $45 million in 2008 through trimming and consolidating its data centres, using faster chips and putting more applications in virtualised environments.
