Intel and Micron announced a new manufacturing process for NAND flash which at 20 nanometers is the world's smallest and most advanced.
The companies said that they're already providing samples of the new 20nm flash memory to customers with planned mass production in the second half of the year.
The previous smallest fabrication process was 25nm and while the difference may not sound like much, Intel and Micron said that the process meant that they could provide around 50 per cent more capacity while offering the same level of performance.
The firms said that they expect to launch a 16 GB chip in the second half of this year which would ennable 128GB of storage capacity in a space smaller than a postage stamp.
