Industry giants form home-network alliance

Andrew Wooden
Industry giants form home-network alliance Four of the largest technology firms, Intel, Infineon, Texas Instruments and Panasonic, have forged an alliance – called the HomeGrid Forum – to help them push a standard for connecting TVs and other systems together using the existing infrastructure of the home – such as electricity lines.

Some claim the lack of such a standard has held back progress of the ‘digital home.’ It is expected that the first products using this one will be on the market in about a year.

"Powerline is the most ubiquitous technology in the world. You have powerlines to almost every house in the world," Intel's Matt Theall, president of the new HomeGrid Forum said.

"There's a huge market potentially for this type of technology. It can be embedded in DVD players, TVs, PCs, speakers — any home-entertainment device."

Apparently, the HomeGrid Forum is recruiting new members.
