Sony claimed to be "showcasing a new era in user experience" at the IFA show in Berlin, unveiling a raft of new devices including the launch of the Sony S and P tablet PCs.
The electronics giant also threw its weight further behind 3D, unveiling a head mounted 'personal 3D viewer'. Sony boss Sir Howard Stringer said: "We are going to build on our leadership in 3D - across the board. And keep in mind that no one has done more than Sony to introduce the world to 3D in every dimension."
The new 'personal 3D viewer' HMZ-T1 is designed to provide an immersive 3D experience with a large, movie theatre-like virtual screen, Sony said.
At a press conference the Sony boss recalled a disastrous year for the Japan-based fit: "We at Sony have been flooded, flattened, hacked and singed," he said but claimed that the "summer of discontent is behind us."
The previously glimpsed as the S2, the $599 Sony Tablet P was fully revealed as the odd dual-screen 5-inch tablet. Tech Radar in a hands-on at the IFA revealed that if apps have not been designed for the dual screens then they will be stretched across the displays.
The rather more standard-looking 9.4-inch Sony Tablet S will also run Android 3.1 and is due to arrive in November in the UK market. Exact British pricing isn't known but Sony said the device is aimed at $479.
The firm's Xperia range of smartphones also received a boost with the addition of the Xperia Arc S, fitted with a single-core 1.4GHz CPU and a new 8.1 megapixel camera but otherwise fairly similar to the former model.
