IDC: Recovery not expected until 2010

IDC has announced that it expects global spending for small to medium businesses to return to growth this year, but has warned that the industry will not make a full recovery until 2011.

Noting the devastating impact that the recession had on the sector, IDC forecast that SMB spending would increase by 5.5 per cent between 2010 and 2014.

The analyst predicted that growth would be strongest in Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Asia-Pacific and Latin America, however it noted that Northern America, Western Europe and Japan collectively represent around 70 per cent of worldwide SMB spending.

“The downturn had a devastating impact on SMBs worldwide,” said IDC’s vice president for SMB and home office research, Ray Boggs. “Moving forward, small businesses will not follow the past pattern and return to pre-recessions spending levels more quickly than midsize firms. Instead, SMBs of all sizes will remain cautious with their IT spending over the next several years.”
