IBM has made further staff cuts in its global services division, claim the union body Alliance@IBM.
The company has remained silent on the nature, location and severity of layoffs, with a spokesperson only stating that it is “constantly managing resources as client demands evolve across a base of nearly 400,000 employees.”
The IBM Alliance union claims that it has counted some 184 job losses in the firm’s recent round of downsizing measures.
That figure is allegedly based on employee information packets the union has seen, though it believes that the number of actual redundancies exceeds this count.
Lee Conrad, the union's national coordinator, estimated at the beginning of the year that some 16,000 jobs would be sacrificed at IBM as the group continues to fight against a global recession that has particularly harmed the PC sector.
Multiple reports since the beginning of the year have claimed that IBM has shed “at least” 10,000 jobs in the first half of 2009.
"It is not right that IBM continues to keep job cut numbers, locations and divisions secret," said Conrad.
“IBM needs to come clean on how many jobs are being terminated as the work is offshored. We call for full transparency.”
