IBM announces new OS

IBM has revealed plans to create a cloud-based Linux operating system for release next year.

The software is called the IBM Client for Smart Work package and was originally created for emerging markets in Africa, but IBM says it can help businesses save up to 50 per cent of software costs compared to a Windows PC.

Although the OS has been available in Africa since late September, IBM sees potential for this operating system to eat in to Microsoft market share in the US.

“If a company is a 'Windows shop,' at some point it will need to evaluate the significant costs of migrating its base to Microsoft's next desktop," said IBM general manager Bob Picciano. "American businesses have asked for a compelling alternative that can help them free up PC expenses to use for more strategic collaboration and business transformation projects."
