The Huffington Post has launched in the UK, offering a range of news and commentary via an army of 300 unpaid bloggers in the first launch of the popular site outside of North America.
A blog post on the Huffington Post UK site, founder Arianna Huffington said that Britain "always held a very special placing in my heart," adding that she was inspired to study at Cambridge based on a magazine article.
Continuing the model as seen in the US, the web site largely relies on unpaid writers, often celebrities, to craft the content for the web site. One such local recruit is comedian Ricky Gervais who penned a short entry celebrating the 10th birthday of The Office.
"These are my fond anniversary memories. They are free. Now buy the fucking anniversary DVD Box set," said Gervais.
In April a number of bloggers on the US site launched legal action against the Huffington Post after it was acquired by AOL for $315m. The bloggers claimed that $105m was owing in unpaid content.
