Sells far more smartphones than third-place Apple

HTC sales soar, becomes number one in the US

Smartphone giant HTC announced third quarter financial results that revealed surging sales and profit as the company also became the largest seller of smartphones in the US market.

HTC reported sales of NT$135.82 billion, up 79 per cent year on year with profits up 63 per cent. The firm’s shipments of smartphones also surged up 93 per cent over the same quarter last year.

The company released a raft of new Android smartphones in the previous quarter including the HTC Sensation XE and XL as well as the HTC Rhyme and Wildfire S mid-range phone.

Windows Phone also got a look in with the HTC Titan and Radar handsets, both of which run the newly released Windows Phone ‘Mango’.

Such has been the firm’s success that the company managed to overtake previous market leader Apple in the iPhone-maker’s home territory of the US. HTC shipped 5.7 million smartphones compared to 4.6 iPhones, no doubt helped along by Apple’s sluggish sales as Apple fans waited for the updated iPhone.

Korean smartphone giant Samsung also managed to snake past Apple, according to market research firm Canalys, selling 4.9 million in the US market and knocking Apple into third place.

HTC’s strategy of offering a range of high and medium end smartphones appears to have gained wide support with mobile carriers worldwide and with all of the main North American mobile network operators offering a range of HTC devices on contract.
