HTC has announced that it will add Super LCD displays to the company's Nexus One and Desire smartphones due to ongoing supply shortages of Samsung AMOLED parts.
The company had previously blamed Samsung's inability to provide enough Super AMOLED displays for the ongoing shortages of HTC's top of the range smartphones. Samsung recently launched its own Galaxy S smartphone which can't have done helped the supply issues.
In a move that looks unlikely to go over well with Samsung as it continues to advocate Super AMOLED displays, HTC's statement also said that the new Sony SLCD display would offer "exceptional natural balanced colour, clear contrast, broad viewing angles and improved power efficiency."
"HTC is experiencing high-demand for many of our phones, specifically our phones with 3.7 inch displays. The new SLCD display technology enables us to ramp up our production capabilities quickly to meet the high-demand,” said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation. “The SLCD displays provide consumers with a comparable visual experience to HTC’s current 3.7 inch displays with some additional benefits including battery performance.”
HTC said that the new panel offers "five times better power management" but it seems likely this statement refers to a full bright image. AMOLED displays draw more power the brighter display but they are generally thought to be lower power than LCD under dark image conditions.
The HTC statement talks about adding SLCD to the display portfolio rather than describing a complete switch. While the Google Nexus One was mentioned in the release it's understood that Google has placed the last order of devices to be sold to end users with the rest being used in the Android developer program.
