HP tops green businesses list

Hewlett-Packard has topped a list of the world’s greenest companies, both in the technology sector and overall.

The company received a top ‘green score’ of 100 in Newsweek’s 2009 Green Rankings.

Newsweek’s observations on HP’s environmental efforts were summarised on the magazine’s website as: “Strong programs to reduce GHG emissions. The first major IT company to report GHG emissions associated with its supply chain. Has made an effort to remove toxic substances from its products, but Greenpeace has targeted it for failing to do better.”

HP received a ‘green policies and performance score’ of 97.9 and a ‘reputation survey score’ (based on an international opinion survey) of 88.44, which were third and fifth highest respectively overall.

The company’s ‘environmental impact score’, the estimated effect on the environment of a companies worldwide operations, was somewhat less impressive at 64.8 – 175th in the general table, and 35th of all technology businesses.

Other tech companies to make it into Newsweek’s Green Rankings included Dell at number two, Intel at four and IBM at five.
