Vendors call for stay on injunction or it impact worldwide PC sales

HP and Dell claim Word ban will affect global channel

HP and Dell have warned that any injunction on the sale of Microsoft Word in the US will impact the global PC market, including the UK.

Both vendors have petitioned the court to allow them to submit Friend of the Court briefs, which detail the impact the decision to block sales of Word will have on their ability to sell PCs, both in the US and around the world, according to The Inquirer.

Dell said in its 40 page amicus curiae brief that it would need to at least 120 days to remove all instances of Microsoft Word from its PCs. HP is understood to have instructed the court similarly. Both said that any ban will have an impact far beyond just Microsoft.

Both firms said that if the court ignored their request, they would be able to import or export PCs and could cause significant damage to the worldwide IT channel at a time when sales are beginning to recover.

Dell also claimed that any injunction will also hurt the public interest, due to the high levels of reliance both businesses and consumers have on the software.
