Retailer also considering leaving its 150 Oxford Street store

HMV to return to original 1921 Oxford Street store

Hilco is in negotiations to move HMV into 363 Oxford Street, where the first His Master’s Voice shop was opened in 1921.

The site where composer Sir Edward Elgar opened the first HMV is currently occupied by US chain Footlocker, but has a plaque marking the ‘world’s most famous music store’ outside. HMV is understood to have exchanged contracts on the store’s lease.

It is also believed that the retailer is considering leaving its 150 Oxford Street store, which at 58,000 square feet is deemed too big for its requirements.

HMV collapsed into administration in January and was quickly acquired by Hilco, who now operates 141 stores.
