HMV plans to increase its footprint in the technology hardware space, with a new technology boss and more new signings for the department in the pipeline.
The High Street retailer, most commonly associated with games, music and DVD sales, has just taken on Ewan Pinder as head of technology from Comet, where he was head of merchandising and store development.
PCR understands HMV is also in the process of taking on an additional two executives to the restructured department to further bolster its intentions in the market.
The move could see the retailer go more directly head to head with specialists PC World, Best Buy and Comet.
Gary Warren, HMV’s commercial director, says the expanded tech team is part of the retailers overall strategy to become a more diversified business.
“This appointment further underlines HMV’s intent and commitment to develop and grow its technology offer as a key part of its overall product mix. We’ve always sought to get our customers closer to the music, film and games they love, but while we’re generally known for our ‘content’, there’s absolutely no reason why consumers shouldn’t also look to us for the technology that enables its consumption and enjoyment, especially when you think that the HMV brand was among the very first to take entertainment into people’s homes by manufacturing and stocking the earliest gramophones, radiograms and TV sets.”
