The Government plans to spend £30 million ($59 million) on bringing broadband services to schoolchildren from low-income families, according to the minister for schools and learners, Jim Knight.71 per cent of UK households have access to the internet, 53 per cent of which have broadband. However, reaching the less well off is proving difficult as poorer families often can’t afford a phone line, with many not having a credit rating needed to obtain one.
The Government plans include providing low-income families with PCs to use, which could drive up demand for software and peripherals in these areas.
