Google has revealed first details of ‘Caffeine’, the codename for the newest edition of its powerful search engine.
The company says that Caffeine will be the “first step in improving the speed, accuracy and comprehensiveness of search results".
Web developers are now invited to test the new search engine and provide feedback.
Though the front-end of the engine will look no different to the one online today, the tech driving it will speed up indexing search results and create a larger index.
One clear outcome of this will be the reduction in time it takes for the search engine to find new content freshly-published on the web.
Google engineer Matt Cutts revealed the new engine on the official Google webmaster blog.
“For the last several months, a large team of Googlers have been working on a secret project: a next-generation architecture for Google's web search,” he said.
“It's the first step in a process that will let us push the envelope on size, indexing speed, accuracy, comprehensiveness and other dimensions.”
Cutts added that “most users won’t notice” the differences that will be implemented when Caffeine is released, “but web developers and power searchers might notice a few differences, so we're opening up a web developer preview to collect feedback.”

The new search engine couldn’t have come at a more important time for Google. Though the company enjoys a dominant share of the search engine market, it has in recent months faced rising competition with the likes of Microsoft’s Bing.
