At yesterday’s Google I/O keynote, the internet giant revealed the "world’s first ever social streaming media player" – the Nexus Q.
The US-manufactured and designed device is a small black ball that conceals an Android-powered computer. There’s no screen – users will have to plug it into a stereo or television.
As you might expect, it can stream music and video from other devices – using Google Play or YouTube apps, for example – communicating via NFC technolology, wi-fi or bluetooth.
Users will be able to stream create playlists on Android devices, and play them via the Q, and even stream multiple devices at once.
Wi-fi media streamers are not new, and it will be interesting to see how this product competes against cheaper devices from strong brands such as Apple or Western Digital.
The connected home is here, but it remains to be seen how big a part the Nexus Q will play – or should that be how big a part it will stream?
