The Chinese state media agency Xinhua has accused Google of orchestrating a political campaign as the debate over censorship rages on.
According to Mac World, the attitude of Chinese media agencies may reflect an increasingly hostile government stance, as Google plans to defy the Chinese government by refusing to censor results on it Google.cn search engine.
“From groundlessly accusing the Chinese government of supporting hacker attack against it to pushing China to abandon the legal regulations on the Internet by threatening to withdraw from the Chinese market, many facts have shown that Google is politicalizing (sic) itself,” read a Xinhua commentary. “It is unfair for Google to impose its own values and yardsticks on Internet regulation to China, which has its own time-honoured tradition, culture and values.”
Editorial in China Daily reflected this sentiment: “Chinese netizens did not expect the Google issue to snowball into a political minefield and become a tool in the hands of vested interests abroad to attack China under the pretext of Internet freedom.”
