Google announced that the Android Marketplace has passed the 10 billion app download and announced a range of premium apps available for just 10 cents to celebrate the milestone.
One billion is a pretty big number by any measurement. However, when it’s describing the speed at which something is growing, it’s simply amazing," said Google Android developer chief Eric Chu on the Google blog.
"This past weekend, thanks to Android users around the world, Android Market exceeded 10 billion app download," adding that Marketplace downloads were accelerating at the rate of a billion app downloads every month.
Google kicked off a 10-day celebration with a range of premium Android applications being made available for 10 to the dollar. The first batch includes the cutting-edge predictive keyboard Swiftkey X and the mobile version of the hit indie game Minecraft.
Other nearly-free apps include Paper Camera, Sketchbook Mobile, Soundhound Infinity and a range of games including Fieldrunners HD, Asphalt 6 HD and Great Little War Game. All of the apps are highly rated, four and a half stars and up.
The web version of the Android Marketplace doesn't have the same sort of promotions as the Marketplace app on the phone so currently the easiest way to browse and install the apps is to fire up the Android Marketplace and hit the "10 Days of Offers" banner on the front page.
