Gem to distribute Roku streaming platform

Gem Distribution has announced that it’s signed an agreement with Roku, the internet streaming brand.

Roku products enable the streaming of online video, music and gaming content to TVs without a PC.

The first players available from Gem will be the Roku LT and the Roku 2 XS, featuring more than 100 channels of content include films and programmes from Netflix and Crackle, live and on-demand sports, and multimedia content from sites such as Facebook and Flickr.

The Roku LT is a low cost easy-to-use solution that connects to the internet through wi-fi, supporting up to 720p HD video.

The Roku 2 XS has an interesting casual gaming offering as well as TV content – it comes with a motion-controlled remote, which connects via Bluetooth and can be used for games such as Angry Birds. It also has a MicroSD slot for additional game storage. It supports up to 1080p HD video and has an Ethernet port as well as built-in wi-fi and a USB port.

Philip Munro, head of business development for Gem commented: “The way consumers access their media has evolved into a digital world where content is available at the click of a button. The partnership with Roku will further strengthen Gem’s proposition to supply customers with innovative products and we’re delighted to have been selected as their distribution partner in the UK.”

Clive Hudson, vice president and general manager for Europe at Roku said: “Our distribution agreement with Gem provides us with access to a wider range of high street and online retailers as we look to build on our early success and develop our business in the UK and Ireland.”
