Borderlands and Aliens: Colonial Marines developer acquires popular RTS franchise amidst concern from fans

Gearbox takes on Homeworld series following THQ auction

Borderlands developer Gearbox has announced it has taken on highly-acclaimed space RTS franchise Homeworld.

The developer has acquired the title following the THQ auction, which saw the now-closed publisher’s portfolio of titles sold off.

Despite beating out competition for the Homeworld franchise with a $1.35 million bid, it won’t become official until next month as the developer awaits court approval.

"Gearbox Software has prevailed as the highest bidder in the acquisition of the Homeworld franchise from THQ," a statement from the company read.

"Brian Martel, Gearbox Software’s Chief Creative Officer, has great love and respect for Relic’s brilliant, fun and innovative game and personally spearheaded the acquisition. Brian intends as first priority to direct Gearbox’s interest to preserve and assemble the purest form of the original acclaimed and beloved games, Homeworld and Homeworld 2, with the intent of making them accessible on today’s leading digital platforms."

However, the move has seen significant backlash from fans of the Homeworld franchise, who have voiced their concerns over Gearbox taking on the series.

Whilst Gearbox’s last release, Aliens: Colonial Marines being slated as one of the most disappointing titles of the year, fans have seemingly overlooked the developer’s success with the highly-acclaimed Borderlands franchise.

Given Gearbox’s history in the shooter genre, fans are skeptical over its ability to produce a worthy RTS outing with the Homeworld franchise.
