Fujitsu and Toshiba have confirmed reports that they intend to merge their mobile phone operations in a deal that would create one of Japan’s largest mobile vendors.
According to Reuters, Fujitsu will hold a majority stake of 70-80 per cent in the joint venture, which will rank second in Japan after Sharp.
Rumours about the merger have been floating around for days now, but the companies previously refused to confirm the plans.
Only three per cent of the world’s mobile phones are made by Japanese firms, despite companies from the country pioneering technologies used in most smartphones, such as web browsing and LCD screens.
