Hits milestone in just nine months

Freeview HD TVs and boxes sell 1.2 million

Subscription-free digital TV service Freeview announced that sales of Freeview HD televisions and set-top boxes had reached 1.2 million.

Freeview said that 642,000 British homes now have a Freeview HD television, just nine months after the Freeview HD service launched. Freeview HD televisions accounted for 22 per cent of the interactive digital television market in December.

"Reaching this milestone within the first year of launching Freeview HD is a great achievement," said Freeview boss Ilse Howling.

"We know from talking to Freeview viewers that having high definition is becoming the standard when considering what type of equipment to buy."

The post-Christmas sales also saw a week-on-week sales up of 378 per cent, Freeview said in a statement, adding that Freeview+HD PVRs were outselling Freeview HD set top boxes by two to one.

Freeview said that by the end of the year 98.5 per cent of the British population will be covered by Freeview HD broadcasts.

"As Freeview HD continues to roll out to new areas of the UK this year, it’s exciting that Freeview can meet this need by offering quality HD channels without a subscription," said Howling.
