In the next 24 hours the open-source browser Firefox will have recorded its billionth download, it is believed.
The popular alternative to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, which first launch back in 2004, currently holds about a third of the browser market.
Firefox owner Mozilla is accumulating its download figures through update downloads and re-install downloads from the same IP addresses, so it is very unclear how many firefox users the landmark figure translates to.
Internet Explorer still conquers the browser market with a 60 per cent share, though that figure has declined rapidly since the arrival of Firefox. Microsoft is also dealing with a European competition regulator ruling which stated that bundling IE in Windows packages was not in the interests of fair competition.
Mozilla is currently working on the next version of its browser, Firefox 4.0.
