After admitting a struggle to make money out of its mobile audience, Facebook has been rumoured to be working on a smartphone, set for release next year.
The New York Times has reported that the social network hired more than half a dozen former Apple software and hardware engineers, and quoted an anonymous Facebook employee as saying: “Mark is worried that if he doesn’t create a mobile phone in the near future, that Facebook will simply become an app on other mobile platforms.”
Apparently this is not the first time Facebook has attempted to move into the mobile phone manufacturing business. Back in 2011, it is reported that the company entered into a partnership with HTC to create a smartphone, code-named “Buffy”. Although this project is said to be ‘still in the works’, it seems Zuckerberg has moved on to working closely with former Apple employees, possible to go head to head with Google’s Android devices.
